SANTA MONICA š” BEST PLACES TO LIVE IN U.S.
Santa Monicaās City Center made a dramatic leap to No. 5 on Nicheās 2025 ranking of the best places to live, rising 399 spots from last year. The ranking, based on data from the Education Department, U.S. Census Bureau, and FBI, evaluates factors like housing, public schools, and diversity. City Center, home to the Third Street Promenade and oceanfront Din Tai Fung, scored high for nightlife and outdoor access but remains costly, with a median rent of $2,719. The surge in ranking is attributed to improved affordability, as the areaās rent-to-income ratio has become more reasonable. Irvine also made the top five in the best U.S. cities list, ranking just behind Naperville, Illinois.

DEVELOPMENT
SANTA MONICA š” LINCOLN BLVD
A new proposal for Lincoln Blvd. in Downtown Santa Monica outlines plans for an eight-story residential building with ninety apartments, including nine set aside for affordable housing. Developed by Hankey Capital, the project replaces an empty lot with a contemporary design by Ottinger Architects, featuring a white and blue faƧade with cantilevered balconies. Originally part of a twelve-story Builderās Remedy project by WS Communities, the development was scaled down after creditors, including Hankey, took control. The site will also include subterranean parking for 95 vehicles.

GLASSELL PARK š WYLDEN RISES
Glassell Parkās Wylden apartments are taking shape near the Glendale Freeway and L.A. River, bringing 370 new units to the area. Developed by Fairfield Residential, the five-story complex replaces an industrial site on San Fernando Road and includes a central 600-car garage. Designed by AO, Wylden features a contemporary aesthetic with courtyards, a fitness center, and a rooftop deck. As part of a density bonus, 31 units will be reserved for very low-income residents. Fairfield, known for projects like the Aliso in the Arts District, expects completion this year.

DODGERS š§¢ SEASON PREVIEW
The Dodgers remain the team to beat in the NL West, reinforcing their championship roster with Blake Snell, Roki Sasaki, and bullpen upgrades. While Arizona added Cy Young winner Corbin Burnes and the Giants landed power-hitting shortstop Willy Adames, neither may have enough firepower to challenge L.A.'s superstar trio of Ohtani, Betts, and Freeman. The Padres, despite ownership turmoil, still have Tatis Jr. and Machado but largely stood pat this offseason. Meanwhile, the Rockies continue to struggle. With talent and depth across the board, the Dodgers are set for another deep October runāif they stay healthy.

USC š JUJU WATKINS
A single moment in USCās game against Mississippi State sent shockwaves through the Galen Center. Star player JuJu Watkins, dribbling downcourt during a fast break, collapsed after her knee seemingly gave out. The crowd fell silent as Watkins, in tears, was helped off the court, later confirmed to have torn her ACL. With their star player out for the season, USC rallied to a dominant 96-59 win, but the loss of Watkins fundamentally shifts the teamās NCAA title chances. The Trojans now face the challenge of continuing their tournament run without their national Player of the Year contender.
