Sankofa Park, Perkins and Will

[🏞️A New Destination Awaits: Sankofa Park Opens Fall 2023] Destination Crenshaw is opening Sankofa Park this fall. This park is inspired by the Sankofa symbol, an African Diaspora that represents history. In aligning with this theme, Sankofa Park will encourage us all to look at the past, while still looking forward to our bright future together as a community. The park will feature a variety of attractions: 1] a state-of-the-art playground designed for all children, of all abilities, 2] an interactive water feature with a beautiful fountain and misting system, 3] a vibrant community plaza with murals and seating, and 4] a unique outdoor performance space. Thus far, our community has raised $72 million of the $100 million projected budget. This vision looks incredible, and we encourage those that are able to view more about the park, and donate how they wish

[🖌️A creative solution to a common problem] It's no secret that many of our city's intersections can be a source of tension. But the Traffic Arts Council has come up with a unique way to bring the community together while making the streets safer with an arts mural project. The project is called Community Corners, and the City of Long Beach is teaming up with local artists to curate murals around the four-way intersection at 15th Street/Chestnut Avenue, and an area near the heavily-trafficked stretch of nearby Washington Middle School, Seaside Park, and Long Beach Day Nursery. The Traffic Arts Council has already planned more murals for other intersections around the city and those interested with a brush can inquire to get involved

[🌼 It's about to be poppin' in our community] We all know that our weather is near perfect year-round. But around spring, our weather is gold and it becomes poppin' with California Poppies. The folks over at The Atlas Heart have curated a list of best destinations to see during this beautiful season. From the nearby Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve in Lancaster, to Death Valley in the Mojave, you and yours will be sure to strike some gold for Instagram. No filters will be needed

[🎤 We've been chosen to have good comedy] The Chosen Comedy Festival is next Tuesday, February 14th on Valentines Day. Various familiar faces will be seen throughout, including Jeff Garlin of Curb Your Enthusiasm, and Dan Ahdoot of Cobra Kai. The festival will have a variety of standup, improv, and sketch comedy. In addition to the laughs, there will be live music, food vendors, and even networking opportunities. Those networking opportunities just in case, you know, you went solo to this event on Valentines Day

[🫰A bit of renter’s relief for us. Just a bit] The year started off with both good and bad for renters within our community. According to a report from San Francisco-based listing site Zumper, median rents increased 8% year-over-year for one-and two-bedroom apartments. However, month-to-month rent declines of 2.4-1.8% could be a sign of relief for those looking to secure a new place. Low single digits were seen across our Los Angeles region, with the highest January rent in the area being recorded in Laguna Beach at a median of $3,710. Santa Monica ranked second at $3,060, West Hollywood third at $2,740, Beverly Hills fourth at $2,600, and Newport Beach fifth at $2,540. So today we learned: renters are saving a bit more, but shouldn't spend all of their tax returns in one place

[👩‍💻 Get nerdy. Get money] Los Angeles is hosting a virtual Tech Career Fair with hiring partners from dynamic startups, and Fortune 500 companies within the technology sector. The goal is to help both candidates and companies match and bring more diversity into company talent pools. The available roles currently include: 1] software engineering, 2] product management, 3] data scientist, 4] AI/machine learning engineer, 5] data analyst, 6] UI/UX design, 7] marketing, and 8] sales. CuratedLA tip: upload your resume, and be extremely punctual

We are thankful to our partners behind Consumption Park and the festival measures that they continue to take for the safety, ethics, and enjoyment their patrons will receive this upcoming weekend

Yesterday, we asked: In what year was Los Angeles settled?

The answer: 1781

Today’s question: In 2018, the Los Angeles metropolitan area had a gross metropolitan product of how much?

  • Over one trillion dollars

  • Over two trillion dollars

  • Over three trillion dollars

  • Over four trillion dollars

We will have the answer in tomorrow’s newsletter.

[🚀 The Magic of Disney continues] Rejoice, rejoice, rejoice! Disney CEO Bob Iger announced exciting news yesterday: sequels to three of some of Disney's most modern beloved classics: Toy Story, Frozen, and Zootopia. The title's most recent sequels brought in the following: $1.07bn for Toy Story 4, $1.45bn for Frozen 2, and $1.02bn for Zootopia. And it sounds like the new sequels are already in the works, as Bob Iger was quoted with excitement yesterday, 'We're very excited about the projects in development for these beloved franchises.' All of these sequels will bring back some of our childhood, and Disney memories with those iconic characters and stories that we love

[🐻Will the thrill be over for this Bear?] Elizabeth Banks has done a lot throughout her career, including her current role of hosting the revamp of the 80s hit gameshow, Press Your Luck. But in all her works throughout Hollywood, Banks has never tackled a project where she has both directed and starred in a movie like her upcoming project, Cocaine Bear. The movie, based on a 1985 black bear that was found dead in the Great Smoky after consuming a jar of cocaine, is set to provide a thrill of a high ride, both with outrageous moments, but moments of a sadly true tale. Banks talks about her work on Cocaine Bear, Press Your Luck, and her concerns, more in a cover story by Variety

[😱 It's ok to Scream during the Super Bowl this weekend] The sixth installment of the Scream series, Scream 6, will have a debut trailer shown during the Super Bowl. The Scream series itself has grossed over a collective $740 million with the most recent installment bringing in $140 million. Scream 6 is set in New York City and stars some of Hollywood's most recognizable faces. And because we don't really want your friends to see your scream face during the Super Bowl, we have decided to be kind enough and provide the trailer that will air during the Super Bowl below:
