• Doto has taken over the former Jewel space in Silver Lake on N Hoover Street. This daytime café offers a diverse, globally inspired menu crafted by the chef behind Edgemar. Patrons can enjoy dishes such as avocado toast, a bento box, lamb pita, and an off-menu breakfast sandwich available upon request. The café also serves coffee and wine. A full dinner program is anticipated to launch soon, providing an opportunity to use the inviting backyard patio.

STUDIO CITY 🚀 MINI FOOD HALL

• Local Kitchens is set to open on Laurel Canyon Blvd in Studio City this June, featuring its chef-driven, multi-menu concept. Known for hosting multiple brands in a single kitchen, the new location will include options like Sweet Onion Burger by Alvin Cailan, Vietnamese cuisine from Tấm Tấm Rice by Tuệ Nguyễn (also known as TwayDaBae), Yalla Falafel, and Proposition Chicken from the Bay Area. Different from its Bay Area counterparts that focus on kiosks, this spot will offer a more complete dine-in experience with ceramic plates, communal seating, and murals by LA artists.

EAGLE ROCK 🍕 WALLFLOUR PIZZA

• Wallflour, the beloved pizza project that began on a Highland Park patio during lockdown, is set to open its first permanent location. Following years of pop-ups and a growing fanbase for their blistered sourdough pizzas with creative toppings like banh mi, broccoli-cheddar, and hot honey ‘Spicearoni,’ Brandon and Carolina Conaway will open their Eagle Rock location this upcoming Sunday (27th). The DIY space at 2128 Colorado Blvd. offers natural wine, dry cider, seasonal Caesar, pandan olive oil cake, and 14-inch pizzas that creatively blend styles while keeping the experience enjoyable.

CULVER CITY 🍜 IPPUDO

• Ippudo has opened its first location on the Westside in Culver City and will soon launch ippudo V, its first fully vegan West Coast branch, in West Hollywood. Known for its rich tonkotsu broth and Hakata-style noodles, the Culver City spot offers classics like the Shiromaru and Karaka Spicy. In contrast, ippudo V will provide innovative plant-based ramen—including a vegan tonkotsu—and beet-based sushi rolls with a focus on fermentation.

DAISY 🥃 SHERMAN OAKS

• Daisy Margarita Bar is now open in Sherman Oaks at the historic former site of the Sherman. Led by bartender Max Reis, chef Alan Sanz, and partner Matt Egan, the cantina-inspired restaurant leans into Mexican dive bar roots with a fresh twist—think inventive margaritas (including a frozen guacamole version) and a menu ranging from duck carnitas tamal to branzino in adobo verde. Designed with upcycled wood, vintage Mexican artwork, and vaquero flair, the 100-seat space is just blocks from Anajak Thai and Mr. Furley’s. Its upstairs sibling, Gilbert Perez Bar, debuts in late May.

• THURSDAY: Experience a moving concert this Thursday at 7:00pm with the SHELL Piano Trio and soprano Mariné Chahinian, marking the 80th anniversary of Buchenwald’s liberation and Armenian Genocide Remembrance Day. The program includes works by Piovani, John Williams, Babajanyan, and Khachaturian, and will premiere a new piece by Professor Deon Nielsen Price, inspired by a traditional Armenian melody from Artsakh.

💸 SOUTH PASADENA 🍭 MUSIC & ARTS FESTIVAL

• SATURDAY: South Pasadena’s 15th Annual Eclectic Music Festival & Arts Crawl is this Saturday, turning the city’s business district into a live soundtrack of LA’s creative spirit. With over ten stages curated by names like Sid The Cat and Brad Colerick, expect everything from indie rock to jazz, plus local art, family-friendly activities, beer gardens, and food trucks. Free and open to all, the festival takes over familiar favorites like Canoe House and SPARC Gallery.

VENICE 🎞️ FINE ARTS FILM FESTIVAL

• SATURDAY: Beyond Baroque will showcase It’s A to Z: The Art of Arleen Schloss Saturday as part of the Fine Arts Film Festival. Directed by Stuart Ginsberg, the documentary focuses on Schloss’s influence on the 1970s experimental art scene in New York, blending spoken word, video, lasers, and sound in groundbreaking ways. Schloss is known for transforming her Manhattan loft A’s into a creative space for artists like Alan Vega and Eric Bogosian and was among the first performance artists to exhibit at MoMA. The film includes archival interviews with John Cage and Glenn Branca and will be available for streaming online via Vimeo.

CULVER CITY 🛼 SKATESIDE FEST

• MAY 17TH: The Skateside is celebrating a decade of youth skate culture with its third annual Skateside Fest, returning to Bill Botts Park on May 17th. The event, themed ‘The Big 10,’ honors ten years of community-building through skateboarding and roller skating. Enjoy competitions, beginner-friendly lessons, live entertainment, and a vendor market. Highlights include pro skater Louie Lopez at the Converse CONS Skatepark Zone and the debut of his new LL2 colorway by Zumiez. Family-friendly activities and free donuts from Randy’s keep the atmosphere lively, while the event’s grassroots legacy continues to grow.

PCH 🚧 DRAFT OF MASTER PLAN

• Caltrans has unveiled a draft twenty-year master plan for the Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu, aiming to address the 1,245 fatal and serious injury crashes reported between 2018 and 2023. The plan proposes the most comprehensive measures for pedestrian and cyclist safety, including expanded sidewalks, new crosswalks, and protected bike lanes. However, a critical 3-mile section may only feature painted lanes due to limited road width. Critics warn that inconsistent infrastructure could increase confusion and risk. While repaving and minor upgrades are set to start in 2026, major enhancements like roundabouts, tree-lined paths, and improved ADA access could take over a decade to complete.

MANHATTAN BEACH 🅿️ PARKING RATES INCREASE

• Starting May 1st, Manhattan Beach will raise parking meter rates and citation fines to fund new infrastructure. Street and lot meters go from $2 to $2.50 per hour, while beach lots rise to $3.50. Most parking tickets will now cost $59, and monthly permits jump from $27 to $45. The move is expected to generate $3m for parking upgrades, including future kiosks and mobile pay. Despite pushback from local businesses over the short notice, city officials say the increases are necessary to tackle ongoing downtown parking challenges.

SANTA MONICA 🏡 RESIDENTIAL TOWER

• A new 13-story residential tower, Asterisk Santa Monica, is planned for Lincoln Boulevard, set to replace a vacant office building with 100 modern apartments and a rooftop garden. Designed by KFA Architecture for Jacmar Cos., the project includes a mix of studios to three-bedroom units, three levels of underground parking, and 16 income-restricted apartments under Santa Monica’s density bonus program. Focused on community and active living, this is the third—and tallest—version of the site’s redevelopment, with construction awaiting city approval.

BURBANK 🚀 BIG MIXED-USE COMPLEX

• The former Fry’s Electronics near Hollywood Burbank Airport, once known for its sci-fi flying saucer theme, is being cleared for Burbank Aero Crossings, an 862-unit mixed-use project from LaTerra Development. Approved in 2021, the eight-acre site on N. Hollywood Way will feature two seven-story buildings, ground-floor retail, and up to 152,000 square feet of office space, though no groundbreaking date is confirmed. It's LaTerra’s second major Burbank project, following a 573-unit development near the Metrolink station, and part of a broader trend repurposing Fry’s real estate across SoCal.

HOLLYWOOD 🔌 TESLA DINER

• Tesla’s long-anticipated diner is set nearing completion and set to launch on W. Santa Monica Blvd. in Hollywood. Rising on the former Shakey’s site, the two-story retro-futuristic space features rooftop dining, neon lighting, a thirty-car charging station, and drive-in movie screens along its perimeter. Designed by Stantec and powered by chef Eric Greenspan, the project serves as a prototype for Tesla’s vision of deluxe charging destinations across the country.

ARCADIA 🚀 ASTRONAUT CITY

• Astronaut City is getting ready to open in Arcadia, converting the former Golden Horse Cocktails space into a live entertainment venue, a performing arts school, and a creative social club. Led by writer and comedian Teresa Lo, this late Summer 2025 launch integrates celestial themes with a mission to nurture talent, safety, and community—stemming from Lo’s commitment to transform personal challenges into collective healing. Offering live shows, workshops, and a members-only Astronaut Club with events and perks starting at $14.99/month, the venue invites performers, creatives, and dreamers to connect and shine.

WEST HOLLYWOOD 🛒 EREWHON

• Despite ongoing rumors, Erewhon is proceeding with its West Hollywood location on Santa Monica Blvd. A larger ‘Coming Soon’ banner—replacing one that was repeatedly removed due to high winds—indicates that the luxury grocery store is still on course. Interior work at the former Sprouts site has started. While no official opening date has been set, on-site sources suggest a potential December 2025 debut.

VENICE 🤠 12TH TRIBE

• Los Angeles-based fashion brand 12th Tribe has opened its second retail store on Abbot Kinney Boulevard in Venice, offering its signature California-minimalist styles inspired by travel and global influences. The boutique features a curated selection of women's clothing and accessories priced between $30 and $200, and aims to create an immersive, community-driven shopping experience. Open daily from 11:00am to 7:00pm, the new space celebrates 12th Tribe’s growth from a local favorite to a celebrity-worn brand.

RESEDA 🛍️ GRAND OPENING

• ​Japanese retailer Daiso is set to open a new store in Reseda on Victory Boulevard this Saturday. The 6,454-square-foot store will offer a wide range of affordable and unique products, including homewares, decor, beauty items, stationery, DIY supplies, and snacks. To celebrate the grand opening, the first 100 customers who spend at least $30 on Saturday and Sunday will receive a special Daiso goodie bag. Meanwhile, Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordan’s original horror Sinners debuted to $61m worldwide—$15.4m from international and a domestic over-performance—marking the first horror film to ever land an ‘A’ CinemaScore. Overseas, top Sinners markets included the UK ($3.2m), France ($2m), and Mexico ($1.1m), with Latin America responding especially well. OHTANI 🧢 FAMILY WELCOMES BABY GIRL

• Shohei Ohtani and his wife, Mamiko Tanaka, announced the birth of their daughter on Saturday, sharing a photo of the baby's feet with their dog, Decoy.
