COMMUNITY

WEST HOLLYWOOD 🪧 METALLIC SIGNS

  • West Hollywood has installed new metallic city signs at key entry points, including Sunset & Roxbury and Crescent Heights & Romaine. A digital sign at Sunset & Phyllis, first introduced in 2021, features rotating public messages. The Crescent Heights sign is a sleek silver pillar, while the Sunset/Roxbury sign mirrors the digital prototype near Beverly Hills. The city’s seventeen existing blue-and-yellow banner-style welcome signs may also be replaced pending review. The project, in collaboration with Selbert Perkins Design, aims to modernize city signage and enhance public messaging.

L.A. MARATHON 🚧 ROAD CLOSURES

  • The L.A. Marathon returns this Sunday, bringing thousands of runners—and extensive road closures—to the city. The 26.2-mile route impacts major areas from Downtown to Beverly Hills, with Brentwood, Westwood, and Century City seeing closures until the evening. Expect side street disruptions and freeway off-ramp closures throughout the day. Metro remains a viable alternative for getting around, and detailed closure maps are available for those navigating the city.

CITY COUNCIL 🏡 LIVABLE COMMUNITIES

  • The LA City Council is advancing the Livable Communities Initiative (LCI) to promote small, mixed-income residential-over-retail buildings along underutilized streets like Beverly Blvd and Melrose Ave, enhancing walkability and housing options. Founded by Lindsay Sturman and Tony Gittelson, LCI supports ‘gentle density’ with well-designed, mid-rise buildings while addressing outdated codes that limit efficient layouts. A new motion seeks to allow single-stairway multifamily buildings up to six stories, a proven model in cities like New York and Seattle. LCI also backs reduced parking mandates near transit and is launching a design competition to reimagine small-scale housing, aiming to turn LA’s historic main streets into thriving, walkable neighborhoods—bridging the gap between NIMBY and YIMBY with a focus on quality housing, or QUIMBY (Quality In My Back Yard).

DEVELOPMENT

BEVERLY HILLS 💎 MIXED-USE PROJECT

  • Westland Development Group is expanding its vision for 55 N. La Cienega Blvd., leveraging AB 1287’s ‘stackable’ density bonus to increase its mixed-use project from five to seven stories. The revised plan now includes 140 residential units—22 of which are designated affordable—along with 19,000 square feet of retail and parking for 172 vehicles. Designed by Kevin Tsai Architecture, the project features a rooftop deck, fitness rooms, and a pool. Located across from Metro’s soon-to-open Wilshire/La Cienega Station, the site joins a wave of transit-oriented developments reshaping Beverly Hills.

BURBANK 🛣️ EAST OLIVE

  • Burbank is updating the striping on East Olive Avenue between Glenoaks Blvd and Sunset Canyon Drive to improve safety and address resident concerns. Starting Monday, and lasting until Friday, crews will adjust lane markings to create more space between parked and moving vehicles while keeping the same number of travel lanes. Work runs from 7:30am to 3:30pm, with temporary lane closures and shifts expected. This follows community feedback after the original 2024 reconfiguration.

PORT OF LA 🛳️ PARK EXPANSION

  • The Port of Los Angeles has unveiled plans for a new $80m expansion of Wilmington’s waterfront park. The Avalon Pedestrian Bridge and Promenade Gateway project will transform twelve acres of vacant industrial land along Avalon Boulevard, connecting to the recently opened Wilmington Waterfront Promenade. The park will feature an entry plaza, historic palm-lined walkways, picnic areas, playgrounds, and parking, with a 400-foot pedestrian bridge crossing a rail corridor.

LAKE BALBOA 🏡 VICTORY BLVD

  • A new affordable housing development has been approved on Victory Boulevard in Lake Balboa. The project will feature two five-story buildings with 194 units, including 48 for households facing housing challenges and 144 for families earning between 30 and 80 percent of the area's median income. Designed by VTBS Architects, the complex will offer a mix of studios to three-bedroom units, with amenities such as 88 parking spaces, a shared courtyard, rooftop decks, and one-thousand square feet of ground-floor commercial space. The Housing Authority of the City of LA has approved up to $78.7m in bonds for the project.

BUSINESS

UNIVERSAL CITY 🏅 OLYMPIC DEAL

  • Comcast has signed a groundbreaking $3bn deal with the International Olympic Committee, extending NBCUniversal and Peacock's U.S. TV and streaming rights to the Olympics through 2036. This new agreement, which replaces the previous deal set to end in 2032, includes the 2034 Winter Games in Salt Lake City and the 2036 Summer Games, and marks Comcast's evolution from media rights holder to strategic partner. Beyond broadcasting, Comcast will provide technological, advertising, and infrastructure support for the IOC, further solidifying its influence in Universal City as a leader in content creation and distribution.

CULVER CITY 🔴 POKÉMON DEAL

  • Culver City-based Scopely is acquiring Niantic’s gaming division, including ‘Pokémon Go,’ in a $3.5bn deal. The acquisition adds major titles like ‘Pikmin Bloom’ and ‘Monster Hunter Now’ to Scopely’s portfolio, which already includes ‘MONOPOLY GO!’ and ‘Star Trek Fleet Command.’ Niantic’s games, boasting 30m monthly players and over $1bn in 2024 revenue, will now operate under Scopely, while Niantic transitions its AI and geospatial tech into a new company, Niantic Spatial Inc. The deal, pending regulatory approval, is expected to close later this year.

TESLA 🚕 ROBOTAXI PROGRESS

  • Tesla is moving closer to launching a robotaxi service in California after applying for a transportation charter-party carrier permit, a necessary step for deploying autonomous vehicles. While the company is still far from launching fully driverless taxis, the permit would allow Tesla to test its fleet. CEO Elon Musk has long aimed for robotaxi services, but with safety concerns around Tesla’s current technology, experts say the company may still be years away from achieving full autonomy. Tesla is also exploring possibilities in Texas, where regulations are less stringent.
