THURSDAY

What’s up my online people?!?

This is Garrett’s Mom and I am taking over the newsletter from Wyatt today, and just typing-in things for this Thursday. This might become a more permanent position for me in our online studios because I love finding things to share.

Oh, and I can include things that you share with me, and put them in this e-newsletter. Just hit the button below that reads, ‘Submit content,’ because its fun to click on things.

ON THIS DAY…

📆 August 3rd:

  • 🏊️ In 1984, 17 year old Australian swimmer Jon Sieben staged a withering finish to upset hot favorite Michael Gross of West Germany in 200m butterfly at Los Angeles Olympics, world record (1:57.04)

  • 🍎 In 1984, 365.7 million shares traded in NY Stock Exchange; the largest one-day volume in history at the time, partly due to a surge of interest in Apple Computer following the release of its Macintosh personal computer.

  • 🤠 In 1992, Unforgiven directed by Clint Eastwood and starring Clint Eastwood, Gene Hackman and Morgan Freeman premiered in Los Angeles. Unforgiven would win four Academy Awards: Best Picture + Best Director (Eastwood), Best Supporting Actor (Hackman), and Best Film Editing (Joel Cox).

  • 👸 In 2001, The Princess Diaries starring Anne Hathaway and Julie Andrews debuted in theaters; the film was based on a novel by Meg Cabot and was set in San Francisco but filmed mostly in Los Angeles.

  • 🏀 In 2010, former Los Angeles Lakers star Shaquille O’Neal signed a two-year contract with the Boston Celtics; he later announced his retirement from basketball in 2011.

THURSDAY HEADLINES

  • 💃 She’s here: And we have everything that you need to know for tonight, and for all six of Taylor’s Eras Tour shows being held at SoFi Stadium. We have the best of everything in our first ever CuratedLA Guide. This includes:

    • The best parking that we couldn’t find anywhere else.

    • Events for you and the Swiftie crew, even if you are not going in.

    • For those true fans: Swift chants to scream at SoFi.

    • And even some Taylor pop-up galleries that are ongoing.

EATS

  • 🥧 LA’s Westside. LA’s best pies: The Westside is getting a sweet treat from one of LA’s best pie-makers, Nicole Rucker of Fat + Flour. She’s opening a new shop near Culver City, where we can enjoy her pies, cookies, coffee, and more. Other slices from the Westside include:

    • Winston Pies: This cozy and modern pie shop in Brentwood offers handmade artisan pies baked daily from scratch and also serve coffee + ice cream to-go with our pie

    • Zooies: This dessert shop in View Park/Windsor Hills is more than just cookies…try their lemon meringue pie, chocolate peanut butter pie, or apple cranberry pie

    • The Pie Hole: This popular pie shop has two locations on the Westside: one in Venice and one in Santa Monica. Their signature pies are Earl Grey tea pie, Mexican chocolate pie, and mac 'n cheese pot pie

  • 🥊 Habit vs. In-N-Out: A Burger Battle Royale: Mashed, a website that knows a thing or two about food, has crowned Habit as the king of regional burger chains, leaving In-N-Out in the dust. They claim that Habit’s burgers are more flavorful, more consistent, and more diverse than In-N-Out’s. They also praise Habit’s menu variety, which includes sandwiches, salads, and sides that go beyond the basic fries and shakes. That’s a strong case, but we at CuratedLA are loyal to In-N-Out, and we’ll take a Double-Double over a Charburger any day. What do you think? Are you Team Habit or Team In-N-Out? Tell us in the comments below, or discuss it with your friends while you buy a Mega Millions ticket for Friday night’s drawing

  • 📣 A new Mexican restaurant with a twist opens in Venice: Chef Enrique Olvera has brought his magic touch to Venice with Atla, a new restaurant in Venice that serves ‘everyday Mexican food’ with a twist. Atla is a place where we can enjoy the best of both worlds: traditional dishes and modern flavors, casual vibes and elegant presentation, cozy comfort and adventurous spirit. Whether we crave chilaquiles for breakfast, mezcal for happy hour, or a sophisticated dinner with our long-lost friends, Atla has something for us all. Don’t be fooled by the laid-back atmosphere, though. Atla is not here to make us feel stuffy. It’s here to make you feel stuffed

  • 🍷 Justine’s Wine Bar opens today: Frogtown has just been served with some new fancy wine and vegan-based bites with today’s grand opening of Justine’s Wine Bar. The bar is located right next to the Just What I Kneaded vegan bakery in Frogtown. Justine’s Wine Bar has transformed their once vacant location to a now vibrant gem with pink hues, tropical murals, and prehistoric-esque lighting. The wine list features organic and vegan selections from France, Spain, Austria, and Santa Barbara, as well as four beers on tap and some wine cocktails. The food menu, created by chef Simone Schlanger, offers light fare such as nuts, olives, Impossible Meat-filled Moroccan cigars, fries with Old Bay Seasoning, personal pizzas, a seasonal salad, and a Sunday lasagna. Yum. Yum. Yum.
