  • In 1988, gangsta rap hit the mainstream with the release of N.W.A’s Straight Outta Compton, a groundbreaking album that depicted the realities of life in South Central Los Angeles.

  • In 2009, Sonia Sotomayor was sworn in as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court. Sotomayor is the first Hispanic and the third woman to serve on the highest court in the United States. She was nominated by President Barack Obama, who had lived in Los Angeles for two years as a student at Occidental College.
