In 1974, President Richard Nixon announced his resignation from office amid the Watergate scandal. Nixon was born in Yorba Linda, California, near Los Angeles, and later represented California in the U.S. Senate.
In 1988, gangsta rap hit the mainstream with the release of N.W.A’s Straight Outta Compton, a groundbreaking album that depicted the realities of life in South Central Los Angeles.
In 2009, Sonia Sotomayor was sworn in as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court. Sotomayor is the first Hispanic and the third woman to serve on the highest court in the United States. She was nominated by President Barack Obama, who had lived in Los Angeles for two years as a student at Occidental College.

🚀 We at CuratedLA are getting ready for a cosmic spectacle: The Perseids Meteor Shower. This weekend will be the best time to catch it. On August 11th and 12th, look up at the night sky and marvel at up to 100 shooting stars per hour. Here are five great spots for one of Earth’s best light shows:
🎡 Leo Carrillo State Park: The Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area is a popular beach known for its limited light pollution, making it a great spot for stargazing —
🏕️ Crystal Lake Recreation Area and Campground: Located in The Angeles National Forest, this campsite offers a prime nighttime spot to watch the stars reflect on the water. There are also pull-offs along California 39 for stargazing —
🐅 Death Valley National Park: Death Valley has the least light pollution in California, making it an ideal spot to view the Perseids meteor shower —
⛺️ Anza-Borrego Desert State Park: This park offers isolated campsites and excellent stargazing opportunities, with primitive camping available throughout the park —
🥾 Palomar Mountain in San Diego County: A mountain stretch that is home to Caltech's Palomar Observatory and offers guided tours on weekends. The nearby Observatory Campground provides clear views of the sky for stargazing —
