FRIDAY HEADLINES

COZY LIBRARY WEEKEND 📚️ NOURISH EDUCATION WITH HILARY: Two years ago, I swapped South Carolina for Los Angeles, a move that revealed my inner education enthusiast. With a grandpa that was the president of a small college in Illinois, to a librarian uncle, brains run in the family. First stop after hitting LA? Snagging a library card. Lately, I've been diving deep into LAPL’s online treasures. As the back-to-school hustle revs up, and with a stormy weekend ahead, it's a vivid reminder of the countless chances to expand our noggins with knowledge, all while snug as a bug during the storm.

Materials and information provided below are available at no cost, but we will need a card from LAPL. If we don't possess one, we can sign up for free and immediately gain access 🔗 eCard Application (LAPL.org)

  • STREAMING: The LAPL houses a large digital vault of TV shows and movies with a Kanopy partnership. All content can be streamed by computer, TV, mobile, tablet and Samsung refrigerator (maybe, IDK) 🔗 Kanopy + LAPL

  • MORE STREAMING: Hoopa is another partnership that LAPL has on-deck. In addition to Hoopa’s offerings of eBooks, audiobooks, and comics, they also offer popular British television shows, from UK-based outlets Acorn and BBC: true crime, comedy, and more 🔗 Hoopa + LAPL

  • AND MORE STREAMING: medici.tv offers learning resources within the realms of classical music, opera, and dance. There are thousands of titles + content to stream from, including live performances 🔗 medici.tv + LAPL

  • FOR THE KIDS: There is a whole LAPL website dedicated to our young ones. Content includes safe-friendly websites to interact with, Kanopy Kids, podcasts, audiobooks, and more 🔗 LAPL Kids

  • MAGAZINES AND NEWSPAPERS: A variety of deep-discounted, but often free, subscriptions to well-known magazines and newspapers 🔗 LAPL Magazines and Newspapers

  • LINKEDIN LEARNING: Our library is one of the best ways to sharpen digital and employability skills. There are also more channels to learn online, completely free 🔗 LAPL Online Learning

But this is just a very short list amongst the many resources that we all have available to us. Happy edu-hunting, you nerd, you 🔗 LAPL Homepage

WEATHER ALERT 🌀 HURRICANE HILARY: Hilary Clinton is set to weaken before hitting our area with heavy rain and flooding. Expect downpours over the weekend and into early next week, particularly on Sunday and Monday. Rainfall could reach three-to-five inches with isolated totals up to ten inches; flood watches. If Hilary Clinton makes landfall as a tropical storm, it will be the first in almost 84 years. —Because this is an ongoing weather-related event, I have filtered the most recent results for us, utilizing LA as the geo within Google News 🔗 Google News

LITTLE LEAGUE WS ⚾️ EL SEGUNDO WINS OPENER OVER OHIO: El Segundo's all-star team secured a 4-3 victory over Ohio in a rain-shortened Little League World Series game. Down 3-1, Brody Brooks and Louis Lappe's back-to-back home runs fueled a comeback, leading to a 4-3 lead. Rain caused the game to end after the fourth inning. BASEBALL 🧢 DODGERS EXTEND TO ELEVEN STRAIGHT WINS: Dodgers' rotation turned around from a shaky July with a 1-0 win against the Brewers, extending their wins.
